For the renowned theoretical physicist and philosopher David Bohm, coherence is the state of being logically integrated, harmonious, and undivided. Rooted in the Latin word cohaerere (to stick together). Bohm thought all parts of the universe, including the human mind, could function together smoothly without fragmentation when people:
Participants drop their old ideas and convictions to genuinely listen to one another and to watch the conversation without aim.
Listen without prejudice
Rather than trying to persuade or convince (which are forms of intellectual fragmentation/winning), participants work together to create something entirely new and coherent.
Create in common
The group often comes up with ideas that are far beyond what any of the individuals thought possible.
Build on each other’s ideas
In this way, a new culture may emerge, unleashing human creativity, empathy and an economy centered on meaning and care.
